Morgan Freeman Event Raises $60,000 for the MED Foundation

Last month at the Hard Rock CafĂ©, people gathered to see Oscar-winning movie star and Mid-South native Morgan Freeman who hosted a fundraising event for The MED Foundation. Freeman's "Zero to 60" event raised more than $60,000 for the MED's Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Morgan Freeman, who witnessed first-hand the trauma center's exceptional care, wanted to show his support by lending his star power to The MED Foundation event. Freeman greeted guests and posed for photos, which guests could later purchase online with part of the proceeds going to the cause. There also was a silent and live auction.

"We were delighted with the turnout for this event and Mr. Freeman's involvement," said Tammy Ritchey, executive director of The MED Foundation. The event sold more than 300 tickets.

The event, she added, was an ideal opportunity to showcase the mission and activities of the hospital, as well as dispel the myths about the facility.

"So many people have misperceptions about the MED. People think they're never going to need the MED or it's only for people with no insurance," Ritchey said. "His name attached to the MED validates the work we do here."

"That meant so much to our frontline employees for him to come back and show his gratitude," Ritchey continued.

The funds will support advanced medical technology and staff training for the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center at The MED.

• The only level-one trauma center for 150 miles
• One of the nation's three busiest trauma centers
• Treats 4,000 trauma patients yearly
• Has a 98% survival rate (after the first 24 hours).

"Not only were we able to meet our fund-raising goals, but thanks to Mr. Freeman, a lot more people know about the excellence of our trauma center," said Ritchey. "We exceeded our $60,000 goal and still have donations coming in with purchases of the pictures."
