Dr. Quin Throckmorton and Dr. Tyler Brolin, both orthopaedic surgeons with Campbell Clinic, won the prestigious Neer Award for the second time having first won it in 2016. The Charles S. Neer Award is presented annually by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) Foundation for outstanding shoulder/elbow research.
“We are deeply honored to receive this award from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Foundation which represents a true team effort by the Campbell Clinic research program,” said Dr. Throckmorton. “Our clinical research team worked closely with our biomechanics lab to design and execute this study. We are very fortunate to collaborate with such an outstanding group of researchers.”
Dr. Brolin agrees that teamwork is key to this recent recognition.

Named after its benefactor, Dr. Charles S. Neer, this award has been presented every year since the first Open Meeting of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and is chosen after a rigorous selection process by members of both the ASES Program Committee and Research Committee. The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons is a society made up of leading national and international orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in surgery of the shoulder and elbow. Membership is by invitation only and Campbell Clinic physicians Quin Throckmorton, MD; Tyler J. Brolin, MD; and Frederick M. Azar, MD are the only three members in the Mid-South.
“Winning one Neer Award is a career defining moment in shoulder and elbow surgery and marks the authors as thought leaders in the world of orthopaedic research,” said Dr. Frederick Azar, Chief of Staff for Campbell Clinic. “For our research team to have won it twice is extraordinarily rare – a feat that has only been achieved a few times in history. In short, it is the pinnacle – the highest honor one can receive in shoulder and elbow surgery from a research standpoint.”
In 2016, Drs. Throckmorton and Brolin with the Campbell Clinic team won the Neer Award in the clinical science category for their research on outpatient shoulder replacement. This year, the team won the Neer basic science award for their work on muscle activation patterns after reverse shoulder replacement. The study is entitled Muscle Activation Patterns during Active External Rotation after Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty: An Electrophysiological Study of the Teres Minor and Associated Musculature. Participating authors and members of the Campbell Clinic team included Quin Throckmorton, MD; Tyler J. Brolin, MD; Frederick M. Azar, MD; William P. Polio, MD; Blake Hajek, BS, MS; William M. Mihalko, MD, PhD; Kunal Singhal, PT, PhD; Shannon Hughes, PT, DPT, EdD, OCS, MTC; Alexis Nelson, BS, MS; Tristan Hayes, MSc; Chi-Yang Chiu, PhD; and David L. Bernholt, MD. Additionally, Margaret Knack, RN from the Campbell Clinic Foundation served as the head of research for the project.
Dr. Throckmorton earned his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University. He went on to attend medical school at the University of Iowa. He then completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. Dr. Throckmorton also completed a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota before joining Campbell Clinic. Today, his practice encompasses shoulder and elbow reconstruction with an emphasis on joint replacement. Dr. Throckmorton previously served as the residency program director at Campbell Clinic for more than seven years. He has also contributed significantly to Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics textbooks and is one of the co-editors of the upcoming edition. Dr. Throckmorton serves as editor-in-chief of OrthoInfo and on the board of directors for the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Foundation; is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ Communications Committee; previously served on the AAOS Board of Directors and the AAOS Central Instructional Course Committee and was assistant editor for the AAOS Instructional Course Lectures textbook and also spent one year as copy editor. Outside of work, Dr. Throckmorton enjoys spending time with his family, including his wife, a surgical breast oncologist at Baptist Cancer Center in Memphis, Tenn., and two kids. His hobbies include keeping up with Iowa Hawkeye sports, weight training, golf, traveling, and scuba diving. Dr. Brolin earned his undergraduate degree from Concordia College and went on to attend medical school at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He completed his residency at Campbell Clinic and completed a shoulder and elbow fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital – Rothman Institute. Dr. Brolin is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of shoulder and elbow disorders. This includes arthroscopic and open management of all aspects of shoulder and elbow pathology including arthritis, rotator cuff tears, instability, fractures, biceps tendon ruptures, AC joint injuries, frozen shoulder, as well as shoulder and elbow athletic injuries. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a proud member of various professional societies including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons; Mid-America Orthopaedic Association; Tennessee Orthopaedic Society; American Orthopaedic Association Emerging Leaders Program; Phoenix Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2017 Rothman Institute Shoulder and Elbow Fellow Researcher of the Year; 2017 Jefferson Orthopaedic Society Fellow Research Presentation Award; 2016 Hugh Smith Research Presentation Award and the 2016 ASES Charles S. Neer Clinical Science Award. He has served as a consultant reviewer of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and as associate editor for the Shoulder and Elbow Section Editor for Orthopedic Clinics of North America.
